IIP's Key Initiatives in India
Taking a bold step toward building disaster-resilient communities, the Disaster Resilience Project, an initiative by IEEE India Philanthropy in collaboration with Internet Society Foundation (ISF) is transforming lives in over 205 disaster-prone villages across Karnataka and Kerala. By delivering reliable internet connectivity in partnership with BSNL, Railnet, and Kerala Vision, this project ensures that even the most remote communities stay connected during crises, access timely information, and harness opportunities for education and development.
Equipped with smart classrooms and solar-powered UPS systems, the initiative goes beyond emergency preparedness. It is about empowering rural India with the tools to thrive, adapt, and build a more secure, connected future.
To ensure sustainability, over 500 local technicians have been trained in internet deployment and maintenance, creating a skilled, community-led resilience that keeps them connected, even in times of crisis.
In the phase-2 of Disaster Resilience Project funded by ISF is going to impact 150 more disaster prone villages across 5-6 states (Karnataka, Tamilnadu, Bihar, West Bengal, Odisha and Assam) of India.
The IEEE WIE Scholarship Program, in collaboration with Quest Global, is transforming the future of women in engineering by providing scholarships. In the 2023–2024 academic year, the program empowered 402 women across 114 colleges, followed by support for 388 more students in 2024–2025—including 110 daughters of single parents and 350 from families earning less than ₹1 lakh annually. Beyond financial aid, the scholarship offers technical courses, expert mentorship, soft skills training, and industry exposure through partnerships with Cognizant, the Wadhwani Foundation, and others. With 402 students completing the IEEE Blended Learning Program, the initiative is creating a strong, industry-ready talent pool of future women engineers across India.
The IEEE Returning Women Engineers Program (RWEP), led by IEEE India Philanthropy (IIP) in collaboration with Quest Global, is an initiative through which we are helping women reignite their engineering careers after career breaks. In 2024–25, the program impacted 151 women across Kerala, Karnataka, and Maharashtra, equipping them with mentorship, upskilling, and the confidence to thrive professionally. And now, RWEP is going nationwide in 2025–26, with registrations already in progress, offering even more women a powerful path back into the workforce.
IEEE MOVE India is a volunteer-driven initiative dedicated to supporting first responders during disasters and building long-term resilience. Inspired by the global IEEE MOVE program, MOVE India combines disaster response with education and innovation to make a lasting impact across the country.
Providing Access to Reliable Power for cooking through Clean Energy
Every day, hostel kitchens prepare meals that support the education and well-being of students. Behind every meal are cooks who spend long hours working in hot kitchens and the institutions that struggle with rising fuel costs. Access to clean energy can improve everyday life. The Clean Cooking Project was created to help hostels and residential institutions move towards cleaner, safer, and more sustainable cooking practices.
IEEE India Philanthropy works with institutions, technical partners, and communities to demonstrate how clean energy solutions can improve daily operations while creating long-term social and environmental benefits.
IEEE PES India Scholarship Award (IPISA)
Despite India’s large technical education intake, electrical engineering attracts relatively fewer top-performing students due to its perceived difficulty and rigorous curriculum. At the same time, many high-achieving graduates opt for IT careers over core engineering roles, creating a growing talent gap in the power and energy sector. To address these challenges, the IEEE PES India Scholarship Award (IPISA), instituted by IEEE India Philanthropy and the IEEE Power & Energy Society (PES), supports India’s brightest young minds in electrical engineering. The program aims to encourage young people to pursue careers in electrical engineering and technology by supporting meritorious students in pre-engineering qualifying examinations.
STEM Lab: Bringing Science closer to Every Child
For many children, science is something they read about in textbooks but rarely experience. Concepts such as renewable energy, the human body, magnets, or simple machines often remain ideas on a page rather than something students can see and understand firsthand.
IEEE India Philanthropy believes that every child deserves the opportunity to learn through observation, experimentation, and discovery. With this vision, we have been working to support schools with learning environments that make education more practical, engaging, and relevant. One such initiative is the establishment of STEM labs that help students move beyond theory and experience science through hands-on learning.

Disaster Resilience
In September 2018, GHPS Jodupala in Karnataka faced near closure after a devastating landslide displaced families and emptied classrooms. Despite these challenges, Headmistress Damayanthi and her dedicated team of five teachers kept the school alive, even converting it into a relief centre with support from the Block Education Officer. Hope returned when IEEE India Philanthropy through their Disaster Resilience Project funded by ISF intervened. It was a turning point for GHPS Jodupala. What was once a school on the brink of closure became a model of rural educational revival. The introduction of resources like high-speed internet, a 75-inch smart panel, and a solar-powered UPS brought 21st-century learning into a school that had lost nearly everything.
From Struggles to Success: “The Impact of WIE Scholarship on my Education”
As the eldest daughter in a middle-class family of five, I have seen my father struggle to fund the education of three children on a single income. The WIE Scholarship, funded by Quest Global and facilitated by IEEE India Philanthropy, has been a turning point in my life. The scholarship allowed me to continue my engineering studies without the financial stress. The scholarship fully covered my college fees, helping me focus on academics and make the most of the opportunities around me. Beyond financial support, the networking and placement resources have further enriched my journey. I am deeply grateful to IEEE India Philanthropy and Quest Global for believing in me. This scholarship has given me the confidence and stability to chase my dreams, and I hope to inspire others to do the same.
“Breaking Barriers, Rebuilding Dreams: Sonia’s Comeback to Engineering Through RWEP.”
Sonia Varshney had a promising career in engineering before she took a long break of nine years for personal reasons. After the break she was eager to restart her career and took up a role as a sales lead executive. She worked in this position for around one and a half years. Though she was back to work, she felt unhappy and unfulfilled. Sales was not her area of interest, and she was looking for an engineering job. She did not know where to begin. One day she saw a WhatsApp status from a friend and learnt about the Returning Women Engineers Programme (RWEP) 2024-25 funded by Quest Global facilitated by IEEE India Philanthropy. Without hesitation Sonia enrolled in the program. The program was specially designed to support returning women engineers who wanted to return to technical roles after a break.
Move Outreach India
MOVE Outreach India, along with IEEE India philanthropy, organised a Disaster Awareness Training of Trainers (ToT) session at Navki’s College of Engineering, Hassan, engaging 85 enthusiastic participants. The training focused on critical areas such as disaster impacts, emergency response services, and effective preparedness strategies. Participants are now equipped to train students in nearby government schools, where they will raise awareness about various types of disasters, their causes, effects, and safety measures. The session also highlighted real-life examples from their local communities, making the training more relatable and impactful.
